Sudan Permanent Virtual Exhibition and Business Directory
Sharing its borders with Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya and Uganda, Sudan is the largest country in Africa and one of the continent’s most geographically diverse.
The Nile splits the country from east to west, while mountains separate the deserts of the north from the rain forests and swamps of the south. Sudan’s population, more than 41 million people, is also diverse – within two distinct major cultures, Arab and black African, hundreds of ethnic and tribal subdivisions and language groups coexist. Arabic and English are the country’s official languages.
Sudan’s natural resources include copper, gold, iron ore, natural gas and oil. Agricultural output includes bananas, cassava, cotton, gum Arabic, livestock, mangos, millet, peanuts, sesame, sorghum, sugarcane, sweet potatoes and wheat.
Sudanese companies are active in many industries, including armaments, automobile and light truck assembly, cement, cotton ginning, distilling, edible oils, oil, petroleum refining, pharmaceuticals, shoes, soap, sugar and textiles. The country’s key export destinations are China, Japan, Indonesia, Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and South Korea.
Sudan produces in excess of 400,000 barrels of oil per day. There are indications that potential reserves may lie in southern Sudan, in the Kordofan region and in the Red Sea province.
